What is Telogen Effluvium?
Nothing ruins your day faster than discovering your pillow has more hair on it than your head, right? Our instinctive reaction is often panic. We worry about permanent baldness, but the cause might just be telogen effluvium. This condition is a temporary shedding phase that makes it seem like your hair is quitting all at once. It is one of the most common forms of hair loss in both men and women. But do not worry; there is hope for your hair again! In this article, we will explore telogen effluvium, why it happens, common triggers, and how we can recover from it.
What Causes Telogen Effluvium?
So, what exactly is telogen effluvium? It is a condition where more hairs than normal shift from the growing phase, known as the anagen phase, into the shedding phase, also called the telogen phase. On a normal head of hair, we see around 5-10% of hair in the telogen shedding phase. However, in cases of telogen effluvium, that number can spike to around 30-50%. In other words, it is like your hair booked a vacation at the same time and forgot to tell you about it.
Major Triggers of Telogen Effluvium
But why me? Why now? What could have possibly caused this? To break it down, there are four major factors that can lead to telogen effluvium:
Physical Stressors: This includes events like surgery, illnesses, or even childbirth. Many women experience hair shedding postpartum due to these physical stressors.
Nutritional Factors: Hair loss can also stem from nutritional deficiencies. Crash diets or lack of essential vitamins, such as vitamin D or iron, can significantly impact hair health.
Emotional Stress: Emotional factors can bring drama to hair loss. Grief from the passing of a loved one, a breakup, toxic relationships, exams, or major life changes can all contribute.
Medications or Treatments: Certain medications, including those for COVID or flu recovery, can also trigger telogen effluvium. Unfortunately, this condition does not play favorites; its effects can be seen in men, women, and even adolescents.
Signs of Telogen Effluvium
What does it look like? Am I dealing with possible telogen effluvium? If you are experiencing hair fall all over your scalp, rather than in patches, or if your hair seems to be everywhere—from the clogged shower drain to your pillow—then you may be experiencing this type of hair loss.
The Timeline of Telogen Effluvium
There is hope, though! Telogen effluvium is usually temporary, showing its ugly face 3-6 months after a trigger. What can you do? Start by addressing the underlying cause, whether it is nutritional, physical, emotional, or medication-related.
Steps to Recovery
After identifying and managing the cause of your shedding, we can then focus on supporting your scalp with the care it has been desperately calling out for. Here are some steps to consider:
1. Nutritional Support
Ensure you are getting a balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals. Consider supplements if you suspect deficiencies. Foods high in protein, iron, and omega-3 fatty acids can be particularly beneficial.
2. Stress Management
Incorporate stress-reducing activities into your daily routine. This could be yoga, meditation, or simply taking time to relax. Emotional well-being plays a crucial role in hair health.
3. Scalp Care
Use gentle shampoos and conditioners that promote scalp health. Regular scalp massages can also stimulate blood flow and encourage hair growth.
4. Patience and Consistency
The most important thing when recovering from telogen effluvium is consistency, patience, and reassurance that it will get better over time. Remember, you are not alone. Many others are quietly going through the same journey, even if it does not show.
Your Hair Story Continues
Though telogen effluvium may shake your confidence, it is not the end of your hair story. It is just a chapter, and the next one is your regrowth comeback! Embrace the journey, and know that with the right support and care, you can restore your hair and your confidence.
